Communicating in Another Language
Some people know many grammar rules
in a foreign language but (are / is) not able to get their point across. (Other / Others / Another) do (poorly / poor) on
grammar tests but manage to (expressing / express) themselves quite well. What makes the difference? _____________________(빈 칸 추론) skills. Language is _________ __________(~이상) just a set of rules; it (=_____________) is a tool for communication. Here (are / is) some tips to help (용법? ) you better communicate with people (which / who) don't share your mother tongue.
∎ When you are speaking English ________(~로써) a foreign language
Your goal should be (to get / get) your message __________(알맞은 말?) and avoid possible (misunderstand / misunderstandings). How can you achieve this?
Put your message first
Learners of English often (worries / worry) too much about (whether / that / what) their English is accurate. They focus (very / so) much on (get / getting / to get) their grammar and pronunciation (perfectly / perfect) that they lose sight of (= ) their message. ______(알맞은 어휘?) is more productive to ask __________(you를 어법에 맞게), "What do I want to express?" ________(알맞은 어휘?) _____________(worry를 어법에 맞게), "Is this the correct form?"
Slow down
Some students try (speaking / to speak) very (quick / quickly). This (의미하는 바를 우리말로: ) is a mistake. If you (will be / are) talking fast to a native English speaker, he or she may have trouble __________________(understand를 어법에 맞게) you. This habit also encourages the native speaker ____________(reply를 어법에 맞게) to you FAST! Is that really what (의문사 / 관계대명사) you want? Slow down and speak clearly. This gives (other / another / the other) person time to understand (용법? ) you, and it lets you (to listen / listen / listening) to more comprehensible English.
(This 와 it 이 가리키는 말을 본문에서 찾으면? )
Check what you heard
Don't assume (________) what (의문사 / 관계대명사) you understood (is / are) exactly what (의문사 / 관계대명사) the other person meant. If it (의미하는 바는? ) is important, check! _______ ____________(알맞은 연결사?), if your friend says, "I'll see you here before class tomorrow," you might reply, "OK, I'll see you here at the library at 8:45 tomorrow."
That way, both people are 100 percent sure (if / that/ what) they meant the _________(알맞은 어휘?) thing. Regularly checking if (의미? ) you and the other person understood each other (keep / keeps) communication __________ (go를 어법에 맞게) without a problem.
∎ When you are speaking Korean with a
language learner
In this global age, not all (의미? ) of your cross―cultural encounters will be in English. There will be times _________(알맞은 관계사) you are the native speaker and the person (_________) you are speaking ______ is a learner of Korean. Here (is / are) a few more tips to remember (용법? ) ___________(알맞은 접속사) you are the native speaker.
Look for the real meaning.
Language learners often have trouble ____________(choose를 어법에 맞게) the right words. _________ ___________(알맞은 연결어), they might confuse expressions and (said / say / saying), "물음표 있어요." when they really mean, "질문 있어요." Or they could confuse similar―sounding words and say "접시" when they actually mean "잡지" They may also make mistakes in word order(의미? ), ____________(creat를 어법에 맞게) a sentence such as(= ) "우리는 갔어요, 학교에."
When ___________(listen을 어법에 맞게) to a learner of Korean, pay more attention to what (관계대명사 / 의문사) they are really trying (saying / to say) and ________(적절한 어휘?) attention to their errors in grammar and word choice.
Avoid negative questions.
Many misunderstandings (caused / are caused) by negative questions. In English, people answer "yes" if the fact is affirmative and "no" if it is negative. This ______________(do를 어법에 맞게) differently in Korean. For this reason,(= This is ________) there _________ (적절한 조동사) be some confusion about _________ to answer a question such as "밥 안 먹었어요?" ______ is better to ask, “밥 먹었어요?” ______ __________ ________(~하기 위해) avoid ________________.(적절한 어휘?)
Watch the humor.
Don't try ______________(make를 어법에 맞게) language learners ____________(laugh를 어법에 맞게) by _________(use를 어법에 맞게) funny words or jokes. This almost never works(의미? ). _______________ (적절한 접속사) they understand the words, they may not understand why is the joke funny.(어법상 틀린 곳 바르게 고치기) This is (why / because) jokes are usually based _______ culture. What (의문사 / 관계대명사) the people of one culture find cute or funny might be considered uninteresting or even rude by the people of (the other / another) culture.
Someone once said ________ the most important thing in communication (was / is) desire. When two people really want to understand each other, they can usually find a way to do(용법? ) it.(do it 이 가리키는 것은? ) _____________(알맞은 연결사?), if (의미? ) two people want to remain strangers, a thousand words won't make them ______________(understand를 어법에 맞게) each other. Therefore, try to be supportive and encouraging when (________ _________) communicating with people from other cultures. Talking with them (are / is) not a test of your language abilities _______ rather an adventure in __________(get을 어법상 알맞게) to know someone.
