Markets: a Window to Traditions

   How can you better understand a country in a single day?  It is not easy, but one way is to visit a traditional market.  For a quick glimpse of a country's culture and traditions, nothing beats experiencing the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes found there.

   Traditional markets introduce the country's people, food, and clothing to tourists.  They also teach them about what is unique in the country and offer a valuable window into its traditions.  More than shopping is done at markets! 

   Below are introductions to several of the world's traditional markets, which are enjoyed by millions of tourists every year.  Which one would you most like to visit?

Otavalo Indian Market, Ecuador

   The small town of Otavalo, in the mountains of northen Ecuador, is famous for its Indian Market.  This market dates back to pre-Incan times and is without a doubt the biggest and most spectacular one in South America.

   Every Saturday, the whole town becomes an enormous marketplace.  You can visit the animal  market, which is alive with the sounds of animals, big and small.  As you move closer to the center of town, you will see pyramids of colorful fruit and vegetables.  There are stalls selling everything from meat, sweets, and herbal remedies to armadillo shell guitars!  It is hard to hear above the voices of traders and buyers trying to agree on final prices.

   The Poncho Plaza, in the center of town, is the main crafts market.  This is where Indians from the mountain villages come to sell their handicrafts, textiles, wood carving, silver, emeralds, and leather goods.  If you want a taste of Ecuadorian tradition, make sure you visit the Otavalo Indian Market.  It is an experience not to be missed.

San Lorenzo Market, Italy

   The city of Florence, in northwestern Italy, is home to one of the world's most famous markets specializing in leather goods ― the San Lorenzo Market.  As a European center of craftsmanship for more than 500 years, the city continues to be famous for its high quality leather products, which are produced in workshops all over the city.

   The market is located in San Loranzo Square, which is in the center of the city.  Hundreds of stalls compete with each other to sell leather goods such as handbags, wallets, gloves, belts, and even leather masks!  You will find lots of other souvenirs as well, including silk scarves and clothing.  Bargain hunters are sure to find something to suit their taste and budget!  The San Lorenzo Market is open from Tuesday to Saturday, as well as on the first Sunday of each month.

Oriental Medicine Market, Korea

   Korea, with its long and successful history of using traditional herbal remedies, is the perfect place to discover the world of ancient medicines.  Seoul is home to the country's most famous medicine market.

   The Oriental Medicine Market has over 1,000 stalls that sell more than 3,000 different Korean herbs.  Walking through the narrow streets, you will be overwhelmed by the fragrances that fill the air.  Here you can find ginseng and special medicinal mushrooms.  You will be surprised at the many different plants and herbs on display.  Furthermore, the vendors not only sell them, but also grow and prepare them for use.  If you describe your symptoms to the person running the shop, he or she will be able to give you a remedy right on the spot.  The medicine market is open all day from Monday to Saturday.  Some stalls are open even on Sundays.

Egyptian Spice Bazaar, Turkey

The Egyptian Spice Bazaar takes its name from Egypt, the ancient source of Turkey's spices.  It is located in Istanbul and is more than 350 years old.  The bazaar is housed in a long, domed building.  Inside, the vaulted ceiling adds to the exotic atmosphere.

   The Egyptian Spice Bazaar covers about six hectares and is filled with the rich aromas of coffee, vanilla, and cloves.  The stalls inside offer a wide variety of spices, herbs, teas, and coffees for sale.  You can also find sweet shops where you can sample and buy traditional treats, including Turkish Delight.  Although the stalls used to sell only spices, today you can also find many other goods, such as household items, clothing, jewelry, and more.

   The Egyptian Spice Bazaar is open every day except Sundays.  The narrow streets outside the bazaar are lined with small shops and are always crowded with street vendors and shoppers.  No trip to Istanbul can be complete without this unique Turkish experience.

어떻게 하면 단 하루 만에 한 나라를 더 잘 이해할 수 있는가? 쉬운 일은 아니지만 한 가지 방법은 전통시장을 둘러보는 것이다. 한 나라의 문화와 전통들을 재빨리 일별하는 데에는 거기(재래시장)서 발견하는 볼거리들, 소리들, 냄새들, 맛들을 경험해 보는 것보다 더 나은 것은 없다.

   전통시장들은 그 나라 사람들, 음식과 의복을 관광객들에게 소개해 준다. 또한 전통시장들은 그 나라의 독특한 것이 무엇인지에 대해 가르쳐주고 그 나라 전통들을 엿볼 수 있는 귀중한 창구를 제시한다. 시장에서는 쇼핑만 하는 게 아니니까 말이다!

   아래 글은 세계의 전통시장들 몇몇에 대한 소개 글인데 이곳들은 매년 수백만 명의 관광객들이 다녀가는 곳이다. 어느 곳이 너 마음에 가장 가보고 싶은가?

에콰도르 Otavalo Indian 시장

에콰도르 북부 산악 지대의 조그마한 Otavalo마을은 인도시장으로 유명하다. 이 시장의 기원은 잉카제국 이전 시대로 거슬러 올라가고, 남미에서 가장 규모가 크고 가장 볼거리가 가득 한 시장임이 확실하다.

   매주 토요일에는 마을 전체가 하나의 거대한 장터가 된다. 동물시장에 가 볼 수 있는데, 그 곳은 크고 작은 동물들의 소리와 함께 생기가득한 곳이다. 마을의 중심부로 가까이 갈수록 다채로운 색깔의 과일과 야채들이 수북이 쌓여져 있는 모습을 볼 것이다. 고기, 사탕류, 약초에서부터 정향나무껍질로 만든 기타에 이르기까지 온갖 것을 파는 가게들이 즐비하다. 최종가격을 정하느라 애쓰는 상인들과 구매자들의 목소리를 능가하는 소리는 듣기 힘들 정도다.

   마을 중심부의 판쵸광장은 주요 공예품 시장이다. 여기는 산악마을의 인디언들이 자기들의 수공예품, 천, 목조조각품, 은, 에메랄드, 그리고 가죽 제품들을 팔기 위해 오는 곳이다. 만약 에콰도르 전통을 음미하고자 한다면 꼭 Otavalo Indian 시장을 들러보아라. 절대로 놓치면 안 되는 귀중한 경험이다.

   Wear sunscreen.  If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.  The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own personal experience.  I will start dispensing my personal advice in my next e-mail.

   Don't worry about the future.  Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve a difficult math problem by chewing bubble gum.  The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your mind, the kind that surprises you when you are busy thinking of other things.  With that in mind, do one thing every day that scares you.  Fear is usually a mental obstacle, not a real one.

   Don't be reckless with other people's hearts, and don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.  Treat others with love and respect, expecting love and respect in return.  Remember the compliments you receive from others.  Forget the insults.  And, if you succeed in doing these, tell me how.  Most people can't do them.

자외선 차단제를 바르거나. 앞날을 위해 내가 네게 해 줄 수 있는 단 하나의 충고가 있다면 자외선 차단제일 거다. 자외선 차단제를 제외한 나머지 충고는 나 자신의 개인적 경험을 제외하곤 그다지 믿을 만한 구석이 없지만, 자외선 차단제의 장기적 장점은 과학자들에 의해 입증되어 왔단다. 다음 이메일로 개인적 충고를 하나씩 해줄게.

앞날을 걱정하지 마라. 또는 걱정을 하더라도 적정하는 것이 풍선껌을 씹어서 어려운 수학문제를 풀려고 애쓰는 만큼 정도의 효과가 있음을 명심해라. 인생의 진정한 문제거리는 네가 미처 단 한 번도 해보지 못한 것들이기 쉽다. 즉 네가 딴 일들을 생각하느라 분주한 동안 너를 놀라게 하는 그런 것들이지. 이걸 명심하고 너를 겁먹게 하는 일을 매일 하나씩 해라. 두려움은 진짜 장애라 보다 대개 정신적인 것이다.

The Egyptian Spice Bazaar takes its name from Egypt, the ancient source of Turkey's spices.  It is located in Istanbul and is more than 350 years old.  The bazaar is housed in a long, domed building.  Inside, the vaulted ceiling adds to the exotic atmosphere.

   The Egyptian Spice Bazaar covers about six hectares and is filled with the rich aromas of coffee, vanilla, and cloves.  The stalls inside offer a wide variety of spices, herbs, teas, and coffees for sale.  You can also find sweet shops where you can sample and buy traditional treats, including Turkish Delight.  Although the stalls used to sell only spices, today you can also find many other goods, such as household items, clothing, jewelry, and more.

   The Egyptian Spice Bazaar is open every day except Sundays.  The narrow streets outside the bazaar are lined with small shops and are always crowded with street vendors and shoppers.  No trip to Istanbul can be complete without this unique Turkish experience.

터키의 이집트 향료 바자

이집트 향료 바자는 이름을 터키 향신료의 고대 거점이었던 이집트에서 따왔다. 이곳은 이스탄불에 있고 350년 이상이나 되었다. 그 시장(바자)은 길고, 둥근 천장으로 된 건물에서 열려진다. 실내에는 둥근 모양으로 된 천장이 이국적 분위기를 더 해준다.

이집트 향료 바자는 6헥타르게 걸쳐 있고 커피, 바닐라, 그리고 정향(클로브)의 풍부한 향기로 가득 차 있다. 안쪽의 가게들은 향신료, 약초, 홍차, 커피들을 판매용으로 다양하게 선보인다. 당신은 또한 터키의 기쁨을 포함하여 전통 음식들을 시음하고 살 수도 있는 스위트 샵 또한 볼 수 있다. 비록 가게들이 과거에는 단지 향신료만 판매하였지만 오늘날에는 가제도구, 의복, 보석류, 그 외 다른 것 등 다른 제품들도 찾을 수 있다.

이집트 향료 바자는 일요일을 제외한 모든 요일에 열린다. 바자의 바깥 쪽 좁다란 골목들은 소규모 상점으로 즐비하게 줄지워져 있고 항상 거리의 상인들과 구배자들로 북적인다. 이스탄불로 간 여행은 이 독특한 터키의 경험을 하지 않을 경우 완성된 것이라 할 수 없다.
