W : I had a serious infection in my whole body and almost died. After that, I lost the use of my legs.

M : But you can walk now.

W : Yes. After years of therapy, I got pretty good at walking. But I'll never be able to run.

M : I'm sorry about that! You must feel really bitter about it.

W : No, actually, I don't. To be honest, I'm just thankful that I recovered. I'm grateful to be alive.

M : But don't you wish you could use your legs better?

W : Sure, but I have to focus on what I can do, not what I can't. The world is still full of possibilities for me.

M : Really?

W : Yeah. He's a fisherman, and I used to stay with him in summer when I was little.

M : When did he decide to teach you?

W : It was I who decided, when I was six years old.

M : You decided?

W : Kind of. I wanted to go out fishing with him on his boat. He said he wouldn't take me out unless I first learned to swim.

M : So how did he teach you?

The Kayak

About the Author

  Debbie Spring (1953-) is a Canadian author specializing in young adult fiction. She writes inspirational coming-of-age books, where teenagers are faced with emotional, physical, or social challenges but find the inner strength  necessary to rise above their obstacles. Her short story The Kayak was included in the book Takes : Stories for Young Adults (Thistledown Press), which won the Canadian Library Association's Young Adult Award and the Saskatchewan Book Award for Education.

<P99>

  My kayak goes up and down in the water. I love it. I feel free. The wind blows my hair into my eyes. The waves are moving faster, making me feel wild.

  This is my special place. Out here on the sea, I feel safe and secure. I can do anything; I can go anywhere. Totally independent. Totally in control of my life. Life is so different back on shore.

  Rocks are all around, and powerful waves toss me about, warning me that a storm is coming. I turn the kayak around and head back to shore. My arms ache, but they are strong.

  I don't want to go back to shore. I'm sixteen, but my parents treat me like a baby.

<P100>

  A windsurfer is coming towards me, racing dangerously close. "Look out," I yell. He just misses me. Stupid kid! He is not even wearing a life jacket.

  "Can you make it back to shore?" I ask.

  "It's my first time to go windsurfing. I don't know how." His voice shakes. Is it from the cold?

  The windsurfer looks around eighteen. He looks strong, yet he seems afraid.

  I take out a rope. "Hold on." I toss the rope to him. He misses. I throw it again, and he catches it. "Tie your board to me," I yell.

  "Got it."

  I paddle hard, straining to move us. Slowly, we make our way. Beads of sweat form on my forehead. Suddenly, it is too easy. "You let go of the rope." I circle and give him back the rope. "Wrap it around your waist."

  "Sorry."

  "It's okay. What's your name?"

  "Jamie." He is soaked, and his lips are blue.

"I'm Teresa. Don't worry, Jamie. I promise to get you back in one piece."

"I thought I was good at all water sports!" he laughs.

<101>

  The wind changes. A big wave hits Jamie side ways, knocking him into the

chilly water. He gets caught in my rescue rope.

  He is trapped underneath the sail!

  "Jamie!" I scream. Quickly, I position my boat and drop my paddle, grabbing the top of his sail. I tug. Nothing. The water on top of the sail makes it heavy. I drop it. I try again. one, two, three. Finally, I lift the sail a couple of inches, enough to let Jamie out. He explodes to the surface, pulling in air. I reach over to let him  remove the rope from around his foot. The rope has burned him.

  "Keep hold of the rope."

  "Got it."

  "The storm is going to hit us any minute." I paddle faster. The rain comes down   hard.

  "I'm already wet, so it doesn't matter," Jamie jokes. I like his sense of humor, but I am not used to talking to a guy. I have never had a boy friend. Who would be interested in me?

 "You don't know what it's like being so helpless," Jamie says.

 I bite my lip. He's the one who doesn't know. We approach the shore.

  My father runs into the water to help. Everything happens really fast. He takes control. Before I know it, Jamie and I are safely back on shore. I stay in my kayak.

  Jamie comes and stands over me. "Do you need help?"

  I shake my head, "No, go away!" I scream in my head.

  "Thanks for saving my skin," Jamie says.

  "Next time, wear a life jacket."

  Jamie doesn't move. "You're right. That was dumb." It is pouring even harder. "Aren't you getting out?" he asks.

  "Yes." Tears sting my eyes, mixed with the rain. My mother pushes my wheelchair over. My father lifts me out of my kayak. Jamie stares.

  "Teresa," he clears his throat. "I didn't know."

  I watch his discomfort. I have seen it all before. Awkwardness. But then he speaks.

  "Do you like roasting marshmallows?" asks Jamie.

  "Huh?"

  on a fire?"

<103>

  My hands turn white, as I dig them into my wheelchair. "What you really want to know is how long I've been crippled, isn't it?"

  Jamie looks away. He doesn't say anything. I wish he would leave.

  He puts his hand on my shoulder. "Would you like to join me and my friends at a camp fire tonight?"

  "I don't need pity," I reply.

  Jamie smiles. "Actually, I need a date. Everybody is a couple, except me."

  I stare at my wheelchair and then at my kayak. My eyes water. Through my tears, I see two images of myself: the helpless child on land and the independent woman on the water.

  I smile back at him.

  "I'll pick you up at nine." Jamie takes my hand. one other thing."

  "Yes?" I choke out.

  "Bring some marshmallows."

D. Be a Reviewer

Write your own review of the story The Kayak.

  Before I read the story, I thought the person in the kayak is a male in good shape. To my surprise, however, Teresa is a girl with disability. Teresa is really courageous.
