구둣점 punctuations 쓰는 방법

 

Semicolon (;):

1. The semicolon 은 두 개의 문장이 서로 밀접한 관계를 가질 때, 즉 뒷 문장이 앞의 문장을 rephrase하는 내용일 경우 쓰이고, 특별히 두 문장이 however, nevertheless, or therefore 같은 접속부사로 이어질 때 쓰여집니다.

(e.g. Mr. Anderson liked your proposal; however, he cannot commit any more money at the moment.)

2. Semicolon은 이미 콤마를 사용해서 연결된 set들의 연결을 위해 쓰일 수도 있습니다. .

e.g. Members of the ban include Harold Rostein, clarinetist; Tony Aluppo, tuba player; and Lee Jefferson, trumpeter.

 

Quotation marks (“ ”):

1. Quotation marks는 다른 사람의 말을 직접적으로 인용할 때, 특히 의문문등에서 사용하게 됩니다.

(e.g. Dr. Prat asked me, “Are you going to the conference in June?”)

2. 사용된 단어가 일반적인 의미와는 다른 특별한 의미이거나, 특정 개념을 나타내게 될 때에 주로 사용하게 됩니다.

(e.g. The term “plasma” , or we can call the concept “the second co-operation.”)

 

Colon (:):

1. The colon 은 사용한 단어의 정의를 바로 내리거나, 그것에 대한 예를 나열할 때 쓰여집니다.

(e.g. There are many emotions that we feel: fear and hope, love and grief, joy and rage, and shame and compassion.)

 

Hyphen (-):

1. The hyphen 은 하나의 단어가 한 줄의 마지막에 걸려서 더 쓸 여유가 없을 때, 그 단어를 나눌 때 사용합니다. 단어를 나눌 때에는 음절 단위로 나누어야 합니다.

( Everyone in our depart-ment stays on Thurs-days for the art class. )

2. The hyphen 은 복합적인 숫자를 나눌 때 쓰여집니다. 예를 들면 twenty-one to ninety-nine.

3. The hyphen 은 어떵 종류의 접두어를 붙일 때도 쓰입니다. (e.g. ex-wife) 혹은 전치 수식을 하는 복합 형용사구를 만들 때도 써야 합니다. (e.g. well-respected teacher).

Dashes ( - ):

 

1. Dashes 는 문장을 끊고 어떠한 부분을 강조 할 때 쓰입니다. (e.g. They had a party - a wonderful one - right after the ceremony.)

2. A dash 는 앞에 나와 있는 어떠한 단어를 간략하게 정리하고 넘어가기 위해서 쓰여집니다.

(e.g. Ordinarily, any writing task will involve a series of related paragraphs on a given topic - that is, a composition.)

3. 하지만 dash들을 너무 많이 쓰게 되면, 그것에 대한 강조성이 약화되기 때문에 너무 흔히 쓰지 않습니다.

e.g. To some of you, my proposal may seem radical - even revolutionary.

 

Parenthesis ( ) :

Parenthesis 괄호는 보통 문장 안에 들어오는 부가적이고 핵심적이지 않은 2차적인 내용에 많이 붙습니다.

예를 들어 날짜, 자료의 출처,문장의 전체가 아닌 부분적인 부분에만 부가적이고 참고적인 내용을 밝힐 때 많이 씁니다.

e.g. Before arriving at the station, the old train (someone said it was a relic of frontier days) caught fire.
